What should you read to prepare for MRCOG II Written?

This is a common questions from candidates. There is no single correct answer, but centain rules apply!

1. Not reading the following is akin to committing revision suicide:

Green top guidelines (every single one of them)

TOG (at least the issues from the last 2 years)

Past Papers (the RCOG book, and anything else you can get your hands on!)

Any good patient information leaflets (Read in between seeing patients in your clinics!)

Executive summaries from NICE guidelines

CEMACH reports (the executive summary should do)

Review articles that appear in BJOG (generally speaking, it is not worthwhile wasting your time on primary studies, just read the reviews)

MRCOG revision books: they are all good in their own way, but one book is a must: Mastering Short Answer Questions by Adel Elkady and Co.

2. What about big text books?

I am not a great fan of these. The chapters in these books are often written by different authors; some are good, some bad, and some are downright ulgy. If you do want a big text book, my favorite is "Obstetrics and Gynaecology: an evidence based text for MRCOG" by Luesley and Baker.  The second edition is due to come out soon.

Don't waste your time on Advances, Progress or the Year Book; there may be some articles in these that are relevant at your level, but in my judgement, most aren't.

3. Anything else?

Yes, Catherine Nelson Piercy classic: The Handbook of Obstetric Medicine.

These are my thoughts! Do let me know what you think!
